The Subaru Solterra came out as a 2023 model, but I guess the guy in the Walgreens’ parking lot hadn’t seen one yet. I came out of the store to see him walking around the car, mouth open a little, peering inside.
“What the heck is this?” I told him it was the new Subaru EV. He told me his wife has a Subaru, loves it, and has been waiting for an EV from their favorite car maker. He was charged up over it’s looks, design, and fast-charging abilities.
The 2024 Subaru Solterra is Subaru’s first fully electric vehicle, showcasing a commitment to environmental sustainability without sacrificing the brand’s core strengths. Built in collaboration with Toyota (sharing much with the Toyota bZ4X), the Solterra offers an all-wheel-drive system, making it a rare option for EV buyers looking for off-road capability.
Its dual-motor setup produces 215 horsepower, which is respectable but not groundbreaking. It has an estimated range of around 222 to 228 miles, depending on the trim, which is slightly underwhelming compared to other electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y or Hyundai Ioniq 5. However, it excels in terms of safety, equipped with Subaru’s advanced safety features, including the EyeSight driver assist system.
Interior-wise, the Solterra is practical with plenty of cargo space, comfortable seating, and a clean design, although some might find the infotainment system slightly dated. Its exterior keeps Subaru’s rugged charm but adds a futuristic edge. Charging times are decent, supporting DC fast charging.
Overall, the 2024 Solterra is a great step into the EV market for Subaru fans who want an eco-friendly vehicle with off-road credibility, but it may not attract those seeking cutting-edge range or performance…including the wife of the guy in the Walgreens’ parking lot!
